The Japanese straight sword, also known as a "chokuto," is a type of sword that was used in ancient Japan before the invention of the curved samurai swords such as the katana. The chokuto is characterized by its straight blade and square or diamond-shaped guard.
Chokuto swords were used by warriors in Japan during the Kofun period (3rd to 6th centuries) and were influenced by Chinese swords of that time. These swords were typically made of iron or steel and were used for both cutting and thrusting.
Over time, the chokuto design evolved into the curved swords that we are more familiar with today, such as the katana and tachi. The introduction of the curved blade allowed for more effective cutting and slashing motions in combat.
Although the chokuto is not as widely known or used as the curved samurai swords, they still hold historical significance in Japanese sword making and are often found in museums or private collections.
